General discussion about loudspeakers.

You are here because of your interest in high-end audio and music. We welcome you to participate in our online community.

Here are some rules to insure that our groups remain interesting, educational, and fun:

  1. Stick to the topic of the group. This way information is easily categorized to make it easy for new members to access. Threads or posts that do not contain relevant information will be removed.
  2. Trolling - members who make a conscious effort to inflame or irritate others will be subject to warnings and/or bans.
  3. The discussion of politics and religion is irrelevant to good audio and is, therefore, not allowed in this group.
  4. Pornography and violent images are not allowed on this forum.
  5. No baiting or fighting. Personal attacks, trouble making, inappropriate language, or any threatening or offensive behavior will not be tolerated.
  6. No spam. Any member soliciting spam will be warned and/or banned.
  7. Do not brand bash. We're all in this together. Discuss what you like and dislike. But don't bash someone or something because you don't like it.
  8. Be respectful of new members. Welcome the new groupies. You don’t want to be the last audiophile, do you?

Obviously, AudioEvo.org's Terms & Conditions apply as well.

Steve, another speaker to look at is the Equator Q8 powered studio monitor. It's a bi-amped 200+200w 8" coax with a frequency response of 38Hz - 22kHz (-6dB). It also comes with DSP room correction capability. Pretty impressive package for $1000 pr. http://www.equatoraudio.com/Equator_Q8_Studio_Monitor_p/q8.htm And the Equator D5 looks like an awesome computer/desktop speaker for $300 pr. http://www.equatoraudio.com/D5_Studio_Monitors_with_DSP_300_Pair_p/d5.htm I haven't heard either of them, but I like their design commitment to phase coherent coax speakers voiced for tonal neutrality and precise stereo imaging.

These aren't your typical chicken shit speakers!

I had a huge 14db peak around 60hz, but haven't measured lately to see what the additional subs are doing. Do need to watch for DSP latency with sub equalizers (time it takes for A/D conversion, processing & D/A conversion), think some of the stand alone audissey (sp) units take 7-9 milliseconds to thruput...?

I've listened to a lot of great systems over the years. Two stick out. It's probably as much about the overall experience as it is about the speakers themselves. The first was when i went and visited the Wilson family earlier this year. Dave and Sheryl Lee had a huge Alexandria 2/Thor's Hammer system set up in their living room. Awesome. The second was when I was in Hong Kong earlier this year. (Yeah, it's been that kind of a year for me.) After the HK show I went and visited Ken Chan, who had a Magico Ultimate II system set up. Again... awesome. http://www.audioevo.org/images/photos/1185/597/a9ec40cefb304e293966d7fa.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/282431_2130503656351_1058767464_32409265_2993305_n.jpg

Do the charged crossovers increase the speed, articulation, or dynamic range of the top end, primarily?

Firmly in the cone camp at the moment with the GamuT S9's, but still have a pair of ML's as well as the new Magnepan 1.7's. Always loved Electrostats, and they will always have a magic...

Based purely on two factors: 1 - regular retail price and 2 - just the components currently being used (not including all the gear I have ready in waiting!) CD/SACD $999.00 (16.6%) Preamp $745.00 (12.4%) Power amp $695.00 (11.5%) Speakers $522.00 (8.7%) cables $790.00 (13.1%) stands $250.00 (4.2%) Turntable/arm/cartridge $2,020.00 (33.5%) So about 50% in sources, 24% electronics, 17% in cables/accessories and about 9% on speakers. Then again, I have always looked for and specialized in dealing with the real bargains in hi-fi! I do have a set of $3000 speakers boxed up in storage, but they are too big for my current room, and I am loving my Direct Acoustics Silent Speakers (the earlier version of the speakers John Marks just reviewed in Stereophile). My review of them appears here: http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue26/direct_acoustics.htm
