Best Albums of All Time

Again, Rolling Stone made up a list of the top 500 albums of all time.  As you'd expect, The Beatles, Dylan and the Stones are at the top of the list.  Here's the top 10:

  1. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles
  2. Pet Sounds, The Beach Boys
  3. Revolver, The Beatles
  4. Highway 61 Revisited, Bob Dylan
  5. Rubber Soul, The Beatles
  6. What's Going On, Marvin Gaye
  7. Exile on Main Street, The Rolling Stones
  8. London Calling, The Clash
  9. Blonde on Blonde, Bob Dylan
  10. The Beatles ("The White Album"), The Beatles

What album would you add to the list?

Obviously more am matter of taste... in the top 10 listed I only own 7 and 8. Clash were wonderful live (saw them on the LC tour). No Pretenders? First album was spectacular...

For me, you're missing Born to Run and Dark Side of the Moon, although I do not know what I'd replace them for in the base list. I'd like to work on a couple parallel lists, one for best double studio albums of all time; Something/Anything?, White Album etc. and also best Live albums. I'll post my take on those in the near future.

First, I've never understood the inclusion of jazz releases on this list.

It's hard to argue with the list with the exception of two albums - The Clash and Marvin Gaye. Hey, they're good albums but they don't belong in the top ten, much less the top 20. I can think of probably 10 other albums I'd rather have there than The Clash. For instance, Nirvana's Nevermind is far better and influential IMHO. I'd also make an argument for Led Zepellin II instead of The Clash. And I would put DSOM in place of The Clash. (Why is DSOM listed so low down? This is one album that has stood the test of time) Then there's The Who's Tommy, Cream's Disraeli Gears (this was a real breakthrough album in terms of rock suddenly allowing improvisation with the release of Sunshine of Your Love!), etc.

I'm quite surprised to see no one mentioned; The Moody Blues:Days of the Future Past, A Question of Balance. Let's not forget Yes: Fragile, Tormato. Jethro Tull: A Mintrel in the Gallery, Heavy Horses. Genesis: Nursery Cryme, Pink Floyd: Wish you were hear. King Crimson: In the Court of the Crimson King, Discipline, Thrak. I'm also disappointed to see no mention of Cat Stevens: Catch Bull at Four, Mike Oldfield: Tubular Bells. If you want to include Jazz & Blues, then where are Muddy Waters: Folk Singer, Dave Brubeck: Time out. The Rolling Stone's list is severely lacking in "good music" though it has managed to capture the sales and zeitgeist list quite admirably.

Most of the mentioned albums and artists in the comments I adore, however I dislike walking the stereotype road of the Rolling Stones Magazine and stick just to rock/jazz/blues oldies.... the RS list is... boring me to death :) Which comes to the firm fact, its all about personal taste.

And my sample is the following:

Depeche Mode - Ultra
Gidon Kremer - Silencio
John Mclaughlin - The Inner Mounting Flame
Keith Jarrett - Bremen/Lausanne
Balanescu Quartet - Possessed
Holger Czukay - Full Circle
Underworld - Beaucoup Fish
Gus Gus - Polydistortion
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
Frank Zappa - Absolutely Free

Theres no alphabetical order or hierarchy of greatness... I just love them. But Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Beachboys, Marvin Gaye... to me they are just bland sometimes in a good way and sometimes very horribly irritating. Why all my friends that listen to the Beatles are boring noncharismatic nobodies? (I just realized that fact....)
Marvin Gaye???? Why not Barry White... Barry IS sex!
What about Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Miles Davis, Metallica.... Putting alcoholic poets and boy bands on top of the historic charts is just so indicative most people want it easy, smooth and depressive in life.
No hard feelings :D

Have you guys heard Rachel Yamagata- Happenstance? Excellent! Definitely worth having in your library. And if you can get a hold of the Japanese release, there are two extra tracks that are amazing: "Collide" and "Edith".

A great list but it's very obvious you are a big Beatles fan. I love them too, but I don't think 40% of my list would be Beatles. Think about it I don't know if I could come up with a list of just 10 so I'm pretty impressed that you did.
