Very good thing in a small package

Yesterday, I got in the mood to hear my baby giant-killer, a Sophia Electric Baby amp that I have upgraded with new caps, RCA's, and NOS Western Electric 396 a's. This little amp amazes me with it's 10Wpc, what makes the difference has to be the large re-wound Western Electric trannies.

I started out with chamber music, Works for Violin and Piano, Fibich composer, Joseph Suk, violin, Josef Hala, piano. The sound was clean, sweet and pure, the piano left hand notes were meaty, the violin with gorgeous tone color and timbre. It was the middle of the afternoon, (I love retirement) and I took my glasses off, and just closed my eyes, and swam, floating with the music. Ahhh.....

Later on, I played The Rolling Stone's Aftermath. I remember forty years or so back, I would be driving home from my night shift job at McDonnel-Douglas in Long Beach, and every night, at around the same time, "Going Home" would come on the radiio. This was swimming in the deep end of the memory pool, especially as there aren't too many "little grey cells" left from back in those days, but great memories none-the-less.

The little Sophia did a great job on even this demanding music, I was able to listen at a very enjoyable level without pushing the "the Baby" too far. Bass and drums had weight and pop, guitars were just about perfect. Man, every time I listen to this tiny amp, it blows me away. Makes me curious about what Sophia Electric's larger amps must sound like. Hmmmm.....

Enjoy,

Dan

Hi Gavin,

Yes, retirement is great, but it was a long time comin'. Make sure to enjoy your youth, cuz life hurts when you get old. Thank God for music!
