Current production 6L6 / 5881, what is blowing your skirt up?

Stripping down and modding the Golden Tube Audio SE-40 this weekend.  Therein lies the question - what current production 6L6 is the one to beat?  I've got the short base Sovtek 5881's in there right now, and have toyed with Groove Tubes in the past, but my 6L6 experience is somewhat limited.  No, I'm not tracking down a matched sextet (yes, I need 6) of GE black plates - what is out there in current production that I should be getting my ears on?

I'm not opposed to NOS, but I'm not putting $600 worth of tubes, in a $600 amp.  I used to have a JAN 6L6GC source on ebay, but I can't find him now.  Again, this is the 'budget' rig, but I'd still like to get the most out of it.

Cheers,

Russ

What about the Gold Lion Kt66 - heard good things, never used myself.

Can't comment on the tubes but what else are you doing to the amp? Coupling caps? PS cap bypass? Grid resistors?

Multiple resistors which are known to be operating at or above their tolerances, getting rid of the cheap electrolytic caps, cathode resistors, rectifiers, and putting in a new power switch. Mundorf silver / oil for interstage coupling, and Multicap film and foil to bypass the B+ near the OTs. They are all documented mods from Sonic Craft (they sell the kits).

What do the Gold Lion's run price wise?

Sounds like a nice overhaul. Remember to short those PS caps before you start poking around in there. Save the jolts for your favorite caffinated beverage.

I've seen what caps can do when discharged, believe me. In my younger days, we used to ride our bikes down to a local thrift store that always had junk tube tv's they would put outback for bulk trash pickup. We used to pull the vacuum tubes to shoot with a bb gun and cause general mayhem in the neighborhood. I knew better than do anything but pull tubes, but my buddy Tim didn't. To this day we don't know exactly what he was doing, but he tried to rip something out of a set and it sounded like a 1Kv switch opening. Knocked him back a good 3 or 4 feet as I recall, and he was pretty much stupid the rest of the day. Got complete use of his left arm back 3 or 4 days later. His sense of humor started to come about a week later.

My buddy Gary Dodd (Dodd Audio) has been known to put warning stickers inside his tube amps that read 'Go Away, nothing but Death for you here - High Voltage'.
