All time Amplifier - what say you?

A question posed to me this morning.  Got me thinking, what could qualify as possibly the best amplifier ever?  That would have to include a lot of criteria, obviously, right?  McIntosh 30's or 60's?  Conrad Johnson MV-75a1? Bedini 25/25?  Gas Ampzilla?  Manley Ref 150's?  Golden Tube Audio SE-40?  This list could go on forever.

Then I thought about what makes an amp great.  A lot of things.  Affordable.  Reliable. Parts / tweeks readily available.  Clean output.  Good sound.  Decent power and headroom.

My vote for the all time Amplifier - The Dynaco ST70.  Why maybe not best in any of the criteria above, I feel it excells in all catagories.  It's been around for ages, parts are everywhere (you can even buy new kits now), tons of mods, easy to tube and bias, will drive most speakers to a reasonable level, and you can pick them up for a song.

Discuss.....

Cheers,

Russ

Burmester 911 mk. 3. Definitely my favorite of everything I've owned, used or reviewed.

Other favorites include: The Nelson Pass First Watt amps, McIntosh MC30, MC275, Conrad Johnson MV-50 and Premier 350, Threshold 400A and 4000A. This new Devialet looks to be pretty special too....

A amp that works well for digital playback does not seem to work for me for analog playback and vice versa. I like tube amps for digital playback and solid state amps for analog playback. :) So what's the best of each that I heard? Well, I like my McIntosh MC2102 tube amp for digital playback & my McIntosh MA6500(no autoformers to screw up the sound) integrated solid state amplifier for analog playback. When I hear a amp(s) that I feel can best these 2 then I'll be sure to post it. :)

My favorite amp of all time at any price is the WAVAC EC300B as long as you use it with new old stock WE tubes. My favorite amps in the 9K to 10K range are the Shindo Cortese and the WACAC MD300B though the cost of the WE 300Bs mean you have to use other tubes. The best bargain I know in amps are the Peachtree Audio Decco integrated amps with the built in amps. I like the first one they made best.

That Wavac is a nice amp. Had one for about a year when going through the SET phase. Amazing inner detail. Agree with you on the necessity of the WE tubes. Completely transforms those amps!

Classe Audio Omega. One of the finest two-channel setups I ever auditioned had eight of these (four per speaker). McIntosh MC2KW's are also fantastic, if at a slightly lesser price...

Ain't it the one we own :)

Among the amps that left a lasting impression on me over the years include:

Marantz 9s
cj Premier 1
Amber 70
ARC M100
Jadis JA80
Rowland Model 12
VAC Rennaissance 140
WAVAC 833 (with right speakers)

Kevin:

I don't think this is the place to discuss the ABX Clark crapola. It's been beaten to death like dead horse.

Myles, what about those ART amps of yours? I'd definitely put those in the "best amplifier ever" category. They are fantastic...

Thanks Jeff: Just trying to be modest :)

Also was thinking more of "classic amplifiers" being of the older variety gear. But yes, the cj ART may go down as a cj "classic" just like their ART preamp (while I haven't heard it in my system, I've also been equally impressed with the ARC 610T). The ART amp does an amazing job driving the new ML Summit Xs, in fact far better than I ever expected.

That's why I said the best tend to be the one we own ;)

No need, those are great amps. I nominated my Burmester 911's. Another amp I really loved was my old ARC D-79. That was a killer amp, never should have sold it. Got divorced over that amp actually, but that's another story for another day....

Anyone here an expert on early 1990's Mark Levinson power amps & pre-amps?

Not sure if the 23 and 23.5 fall into that category but they were excellent amps. If we're talking 70's/80's, I had a great pair of ML-2's....

Hi Fi Spicoli
While I know it's very dependent upon the type of music you prefer as well as the equipment/speakers hooked up to them...below are a few amps that made a big impression on me:

AudioNote Onganku
Art Audio Jota
McIntosh MC275s
Mark Levinson Monoblock Towers (I don't remember the model number but it was in the mid to late 90s)
