Great list, Mike, and a bunch of my favorites are on it (especially the Vandals!). Ok, this is my category, Mr. Trebek. First off, getting out of the way the undisputed fact that Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song" album is all anyone really needs and comprises a top ten all by itself, here's a list, in no particular order:
James Brown- Santa Claus, Go Straight to the Ghetto Burl Ives- A Holly, Jolly Christmas Dean Martin- Baby, It's Cold Outside Keith Richard- Run, Run Rudolph Little Drummer Boy- The Temptations Calexico- The Gift X-Change Charles Brown/Otis Redding/Fabulous Thunderbirds (couldn't decide!)- Merry Christmas, Baby Bing and Bowie- Little Drummer Boy El Vez-Feliz Navi-nada The Dickies- Silent Night
Ohh - I like this list concept - just gotta get some work done... Can we list fav Christmas albums instead (there's a rotation of certain holiday albums in the Mercer household every year for like 11 years, even though we're proud Heebs) - - and some of the titles will surprise you!!!
OK - (and, Remember I said - there will be some surprising titles here) - we Jews do love Christmas songs!!!
The Annual Christmas Season/Mercer's Household Holiday Spins:
My wifey's favorite Christmas song: "Fairytale of New York" - The Pogues
Albums in Rotation for close to a Decade:
#1: Barenaked Ladies - "Barenaked for the Holidays"
#2: Shawn Colvin - "Holiday Songs & Lullaby's"
#3: Ally McBeal - "A Very Ally Christmas" feat. Vonda Shepard
#4 Jewel - "Joy, a Holiday Collection" (HIGHLY sentimental on my part, busted my ASS on this album, and was the first record where I got props in the artwork/insert) - but her "Ave Maria" will blow you away, and only Arif could have gotten that performance from her!!
#5: Squirrel Nut Zippers - "Christmas Caravan"
#6: The Edge of Christmas compilation (incl the song by The Pogues above)
